A highly successful work experience programme run by Trident from Edexcel (South East) and Surrey Police is in its fourth year.
Fifty school students aged 14 to 16 take part in the annual, three–day programme — the largest of its kind in the country — giving them an insight into basic police training.
The top 25 participants from each programme are offered a further year's work experience, outside school hours, with a local division of the county's police force, and are encouraged to complete a BTEC First in Public Services.
Officially known as Surrey Police Community Students, the youngsters wear their own uniform and accompany Neighbourhood Specialist Officers or Police Community Support Officers on non–confrontational patrol duties.
The force's Mount Browne Training HQ at Guilford ensures students work with experienced and dedicated serving and retired police officers.
Trident from Edexcel Surrey administers the scheme — advising schools, co–ordinating and assessing applications, shortlisting and allocating placements and attending the actual programme to monitor the young people's progress. It also helps assess and select the top 25 students.
Students apply for selection from January, submit a project for assessment and, if successful, are awarded a place in September to take part in October.
Commenting on his experience, one student from Reigate said: "I'd like to thank the police officers and the ex–police officers for all the work they did to help me. It was an excellent work experience — I don't think you could improve it."
Project Manager Lesley Clayton, from Trident's Surrey office, said: "Students on the programme are able to develop their communication skills, gain confidence, enhance their ability to think independently and gain valuable insight into public services — all qualities employers value".
Lesley added: "Trident is committed to giving students a unique experience, encouraging them to stay in education to enhance their skills and formal qualifications as a route into a worthwhile career — and lifelong learning."
Other police forces are interested in the scheme, and have been approached.
Trident is also discussing a similar scheme with the Royal Navy in Portsmouth and the fire service in London, using the Surrey Police programme as a model.
