ALAN (Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy)

Available at Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2, Alan can be taken by Learners at any age. Many schools have been using ALAN and ALAN Onscreen with outstanding success, a Level 2 ALAN qualification in both Literacy and Numeracy is equivalent to half a GCSE, providing Learners with a stepping stone for further study.

Using ALAN to prepare for Functional Skills

Helping Learners to become more 'functional' is supported by existing practices and those centres who currently offer our Adult Literacy and Adult Numeracy are well on their way to being ready for Functional Skills.

The best way to prepare for Functional Skills is to continue to enhance the quality of your Skills for Life provision. The main elements of good practice will stay the same.

  • Functional Skills is about developing learners skills, so opportunities for practise is very important, which is why we are providing all our onscreen ALAN centres with extra tests on CD-ROM.
  • Functional Skills are about practical application, so embedding them in real life situations is crucial.

It is recommended that students are introduced to ALAN qualifications and take a practice test before they start their placement. For further details of these qualifications and to take a test please click here.

Schools are advised to send for an ‘ALAN’ schools pack, this is available from publications, please call 01623 467467 quoting Z019585.
